Nov. 28th

Just a reminder that we will have a spelling assessment tomorrow.

A Honey fundraising newsletter went home yesterday.

Thank you to everyone who has donated food for the Mayor's Food Drive.  There is still time left to donate.

Today we continued to work on our persuasive writing.  Your child may try some of their arguments out on you this evening.

In math, we were practicing dividing using arrays.  The statement 8÷4 can be read like this:   If 8 is split or divided into 4 rows, how many will be in each row?

Have your children try to answer the following division problems using arrays:

6÷2
10÷5
8÷4
9÷3

We also talked about remainders.  Have your child explain to you what a remainder is in division.

We made cards for SunHee, our student educational assistant as it was her last day with us.

Nov 26th

We are continuing to collect food for the Mayor's Food Drive.

We made Christmas Cards for our Canadian troops who are serving overseas. This is a school-wide project organized by a grade 3 student and his mom.  What an amazing way to show our support.

In math, we read the book entitled, The Doorbell Rang.  We completed the division questions outlined in the story as we read. Students now understand that division is a number split up into equal groups.  In the story, the cookies were constantly being shared amongst different numbers of children.

Nov 25th

Over the next week, we will be working with the spelling words we received 2 weeks ago.  We will write an assessment this Friday.  Today we played games with our words and then drew a picture with our words hidden inside.

We began looking at persuasive writing and brainstorming ideas of what we might like to persuade someone else to do.  A few of the us thought we might light to persuade Mrs. Nayyar to give us more computer time or longer recesses.

In math, we began looking at division.   We realized that 15 ÷ 3 is the same as asking, "If 15 were divided equally into 3 groups, how many would be in each group?"

Students can work on the following problems using the above making groups strategy.

4÷2=

8÷2 =

10÷5=

12÷4=

In social we began to look at the country of Peru and wrote down questions about what we wanted to learn about it.

We started our new read aloud, which the students are very excited about.

We Light the Night Skies
Note:  The lyrics (and the title) have been altered.  Students will need to sing their version over top of the recorded words.

There’s love for you and love for me
We light the night skies – colours burning brightly
We hope for peace and harmony

Our families come together to celebrate

Thank you to all the parents who attended our Remembrance Day Ceremony, and for listening to your children sing our songs at home.  The students did an amazing job showing respect and honoring those who fought to give us the life we cherish in this Country.

Wednesday, November 6, 2019

Nov 6th

Remembrance Day Ceremony will be held this Friday at 10:30am.  Please continue to practice your songs.

Mrs. Nayyar's son came to school this morning for 'Take Your Kid to Work Day'.  It was a lot of fun having a tall grade 9 student in our classroom.

In math, we worked more on repeated addition and how it related to multiplication.  Have your child figure out the following multiplication questions using repeated addition.

 example:  5 x 4  can be read as:   Add 5 four times (5 +5+5+5=20)

3 x 5

2 x 4

5 x 6

4 x 4

In writers workshop, we looked at how to grab our reader's attention with our opening sentence.  Ask your child what those different methods are (question, fact, dialogue, sound, action, problem).  Tomorrow we will try to incorporate one of those beginnings into our next writing piece.

We looked at the poem, In Flanders's Fields and thought about what it meant to us.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
        In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
        In Flanders fields.

In social studies, we read the book Fly Away Home, to go along with the social unit of Quality of Life.  Students then had a discussion about what one needed to have a good quality of life.  Have your child tell you what this story was about.

In math, we looked at how we could multiply using repeated addition.  For example, 4x3 can be looked at as  4 + 4+ 4.

In spelling, we practiced our words by creating a long train. Ask your child to show you how.
