Reminder:  There is no school tomorrow for students.

I will put in a scholastic order on Monday.

On Monday the Grade 3's have the company Safe4Life working with them.  They will be learning all about self-defense and personal safety.  This is an amazing opportunity for children this age.

Today we played math games, finished off some paragraph writing, did some research on the Sahara Desert, played basketball in gym and learned a little more Ukelele in music!  What a way to finish off the week.

Have a great weekend everyone and remember to read at least 20 minutes each and every day.

Reminder:  There is no school for students this Friday as it is a PD Day.

In math, we counted up the money our class raised for the Koalas and Kangas.  We used play money to make it more realistic.  Ask your child if they remember the total amount.  We also created a creature on grid paper and measured its perimeter.

We read aloud some great paragraphs written by Room 16 that outline our personal goals for 2020. We continue to discuss the importance of editing our written work.

We watched a video about Chinese New Year!  We then played a boggle game to come up with words that related to this topic.

Ask your child what they created in Science today.

A list of the new spelling words will be on the blog tomorrow.  The assessment will be on Thursday this week.

We continue to work on paragraph writing, looking at ways to edit our writing to make it more detailed and interesting.

In science, we continued with our building.  Ask your child for specific details.

Sadly, we finished our read aloud "The One and Only Ivan."  We are all looking forward to the release of the movie later this year.

Building in science!

In music, we learned a little bit about how to play the ukelele!  Ask your child what note they learned to play.

In social, we talked a little bit about what it means to be a global citizen.  We realized we are being global citizens by helping out the Koalas and Kangas in Australia.  We also worked to finish up our geographic maps of Tunisia.

In math, we measured the perimeter of a tile on the floor and a book in the classroom.  We are keeping in mind our mental math strategies as we add up the length of each side of the object.  Have your child calculate the perimeter of a square that is 22 cm on each side.  Next, have them calculate the perimeter of a rectangle the is 12 cm on two sides and 15 cm on the other two sides.

Help support the Koalas and Kangas!

Remember to hand in field trip forms as soon as possible.

The CHS “Coventry Cares Club” is asking students and families to support our latest initiative “Koalas & Kangas” by bringing a loonie or a toonie to school between January 20 and March 19, 2020. The students thought that this would be a good way to be global citizens and make a difference by helping and supporting animals that have been affected by the current Australian wildfires. With your help, we hope to send a really BIG cheque to one of the charities currently rescuing and nursing injured koalas and kangaroos. The BEST part of this project is that Mrs. Verstraete’s daughter, Miss V., is currently teaching in Brisbane, AU, and can personally deliver our money to the charity of our choice. She will also send us back some pictures of our money in action! Thanks for your help and support of “Koalas & Kangas”!

In math, we learned 2 new card games, Sneaky Place Value, and Go Fish.  Have your child teach you these games.  It only requires a deck of cards!

As a class, we practiced writing a paragraph with all the ingredients.  We also practiced editing it to make it even better.

In social we began looking at the geographic location of Tunisia.  We are applying our knowledge to our inquiry project as we scout out a great place to build a zoo.

We continued our buddy writing in Daily 5.  Tomorrow we will have an opportunity to share what we have written so far.

Just a  couple more days of cold weather to dress warmly for this week, hang in there everyone!

We started a new project in math!!  This will be more of an inquiry project that will involve working across the curriculum in multiple subjects.  We had a mini-lesson in measurement today to kickstart our planning.  Next class, we will look more at units of measurement and the proper way to measure.

We took a deeper look into paragraph writing that included a topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence.  We are working to make our sentences within the paragraph more interesting.

In science, we continue to explore in our building unit.

January 6th

Welcome back!  I hope everyone had an enjoyable, restful time with family and friends.

The students spent some time writing about their winter holidays. We had to remind ourselves about interesting beginnings, complete sentences, proper punctuation, and adjectives.  We also took the time to edit our work.    At home, it is important for students to practice their writing, as well as their reading.  A great idea would be to incorporate their spelling words for the week into their writing when practicing at home.  Tomorrow we will have a chance to share our writing with the class.

In math, we reviewed multiplication and division and worked to solve some word problems.

We got our new spelling words for the week.

can't
wasn't
I'm
isn't
don't
product
quotient
mathematics
division
product

At the end of the day, we read our read aloud, The One and Only Ivan.  Students began a visual journal page that they will add to each time we read together.
