Orange Shirt Day

Reminders:  Picture day is Thursday, October 3, 2019

Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather.

Today we recognized Orange Shirt Day.  We learned it was about the Indigenous children who were forced to go to a residential school. We had an assembly in the gym to help us recognize this day.

In gym, we played a new game with dots and music.  Ask me to explain the games to you.

In math, we did a train pattern.  It was an increasing pattern.

In writing, we wrote about Orange Shirt Day.  We wrote what we thought it was and what we know about it now.

In science, we continued to learn about rocks and minerals.  Ask your child what they learned today.

We read two books, The Eagle Feather, and The Orange Shirt Story.

We had our very first day of Genius Hour.  We invented anything we wanted, using maker space materials.

We worked on completing our time capsules.  Students are able to bring in a small item and/or photograph from home to put into their time capsules.  They will have their capsules returned at the end of the school year.

In math, we finished our sticky triangle pattern.  Have your child figure out the next three numbers of this pattern:  1,4,9,16,25,36,49,64, ____,______,_____

We ran outside for the Terry Fox Run!  Some of us were able to run for 7 laps around the field!  We raised $263.05 in Room 16 for the Terry Fox Run!!!

In Social Studies, we worked hard on completing our maps of Canada.

In music, we had a guest teacher.  She taught us 2 games.

We wrote about how Terry Fox was an everyday life hero.   We also wrote how we are real-life heroes too. We read a story about a girl who discovered that her superpower was helping others by being kind.

In math, we found a neat pattern in the sticky triangles.  Try to figure out the next three numbers of the pattern :  1, 4, 9, 16, ____, ______, ______

Today was fun lunch!

Sept. 25th

Tomorrow is our Terry Fox Day run.  So far, our class has raised $44.05 for Terry.  Way to go, Room 16!

In writer's workshop, we began looking at how 4 magic words (Once, if, sometimes, when) can help us add details to our writing.  For example:  I really like to eat pizza.  Once I ate a whole cheese pizza by myself for breakfast!

In math, we carried on with our toothpick problem.  We continue to be surprised by the patterns that appear.

In Science, we are continuing to explore rocks and minerals.

In Daily 5 we did silent reading, word work, and listening to reading.

In math, we did a match stick triangle pattern problem.  It is a work in progress!  Ask me how many triangles would be in the next row?  How many sticks would I need to make the next row?  What patterns do you see?

9 triangles from matches.

In social studies, we filled in our own Canada maps.  Ask me how many provinces and territories Canada has?  What is the capital of Alberta?  What is a compass rose?

We talked about the importance of punctuation in our writing  😉

Please make sure your child hands in their clubs form asap.  If your child would like to be part of the grade 3 choir,  they will need a note for Mrs. Bessemer saying they have permission.  Look on the music blog for more information.

We practiced for the Terry Fox run in gym.  The run will be held this Thursday.  If it is raining, we will be running inside the gym.

A consent form also went home with those children who were not at the parent/teacher information evening last week.  By signing this form you give the school permission to post your child's picture on our blog and at any videos shown during school assemblies.

We started 2 new daily 5 stations today, Read to someone and Word Work.  We are currently working on our Grade 3 no excuse words until we begin our spelling program in October.

In math, we worked on figuring out rules to some very tricky increasing patterns created by students in the classroom.  Have your child figure out the rule for 10, 13, 17, 22, ____, _____, _____

We would like to invite you to join us on Thursday, September 19th for our annual back to school BBQ and our Meet the Teacher evening.

The BBQ will be from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm.  We will be serving hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and juice, which can be paid for upon arrival.
The cost per person is $4.00.

During this time, we will also be running a series of Meet the Teacher sessions in the school for students in K-3.
Sessions will run at the following times:
4:15 – 4:45
4:45 – 5:15
5:15 – 5:45

During these sessions, you will learn about the programming in your child’s classroom and you will have an opportunity to meet their teacher and ask questions.  These are group sessions, with many families attending together.  There is no sign up for Meet the Teacher; you simply choose the one that works best for you.  Please plan to arrive at the session at the start time, as the presentations will begin promptly.  You are welcome to attend the BBQ either before or after your desired Meet the Teacher session.

If you are unable to make it on Thursday evening, we will also be running one session on Friday, September 20 from 9:00 – 9:30 am.  No sign up is required for this session either.

We did a spelling assessment today.  We found some words easy and others tricky.

We had our very first science class today with Ms. Fagnan!  Our first unit is rocks and minerals.

We did 18 minutes of silent reading.  We focused on comprehending what we were reading.  We listened to a read aloud and practiced visualizing, questioning and inferencing to help us comprehend.

We looked at the increasing triangle pattern in math.  We made a table to help us see the pattern emerging.

Scholastic book orders are due Wednesday.  Please do not send cash.

Please find a fundraising opportunity in your child's green home folder.

We had our second practice fire drill and we did amazing!  We were even outside playing our math running game with Room 15 when it happened.

During our writing block, we wrote about all the things we are thankful for.  We are beginning to lengthen our writing by adding extra details so we attempted to include why we are thankful for those things.

We practice drawing our nose, lips, and ears today.  Next week we will draw our self-portraits.

Have a wonderful weekend!

First Day!

Thank you, parents, for all the hard work you do with your children at home.  I saw manners, kindness, and respectfulness in my classroom today.  What a treat!

If you have any questions please feel free to email me.  fanayyar@cbe.ab.ca

Today was a day where we had a chance to review important school rules, learn about our classroom and make new friends.  Ask your child about who they sat beside at their table group.  Ask them about their favorite part of the day.  Ask them about their goals for this year.

This year the school hours will remain the same, with the exception of Friday.  We will now finish at 1pm on Fridays.  Please send a large snack with your child on that day.
